American Bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) - The Grove National Historic Landmark, Glenview, IL - 5 December 2009
My bent is generally on the photography and getting the shot, and I have more than once walked away thinking I knew what I had captured. In this case, the group I was with told me this was bittersweet . . . when I made it to captioning, I learned that there is an American and an Oriental variety. So I consulted with the naturalist at The Grove and was told, "... we have only seen the native variety, American Bittersweet (Celastrus scandens), on our property, so I'm sure that's what you shot." The Glenview Park District’s 18.6 acre Wagner Farm is one of the last working dairy farms in Cook County and is open to the public for recreation and learning. The farm provides a unique opportunity for families to learn about our farming heritage and experience first hand “the way things used to be.” Chicago North Shore on Flickr: Posted a Photo

Wagner Farm is an 18.6 acre farm owned and operated by the Glenview Park District. It is being developed to interpret historical farming methods from the 1920s-1950s. Many historians cite the 1920s as a time with some of the greatest changes in American agriculture. Industrialization, advances in chemistry and biology, and better access to education helped farmers increase their farm's output.
The farm offers public visitation hours, educational programs for all ages, and special events throughout the year as well as seasonal sales of farm products. Public visitation hours are Monday - Saturday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Admission is free on those days (unless there is a special event) and a farm story time is featured at 4:00 pm each Thursday. Chicago North Shore on Flickr: Posted a Photo
